How Claude Code edits video — and how to get a reel without plugins

Claude Code video editing means Anthropic's AI coding agent writes and runs code that makes the video — it has no timeline of its own. It is a powerful route for developers: with the Remotion plugin, FFmpeg and skills from GitHub, one prompt can turn into an animated promo. For a small business that needs a reel every week, there is a shorter route: in Weyvox you open the chat with Alice, the AI marketer, write what video you need, and she builds it from your material and her own AI photos and clips, shows it scene by scene and changes any scene you point to. Below is what each route takes, as of November 2026.

How Claude Code edits video: it writes code

Claude Code is Anthropic's AI coding agent: it works in a terminal or a desktop app, reads and writes files on your computer and runs commands. There is no video editor inside it — no timeline, no preview window, no export button. When it “edits a video”, it does one of two things:

  • It writes the video as code. The popular route is Remotion, where every frame is a React component: Claude writes the text animations, zooms and counters, and Remotion renders them to an MP4.
  • It runs video tools on your footage. Claude writes FFmpeg commands: cut a clip, join files, burn in subtitles, turn a horizontal video into 9:16, even out the loudness.

So the AI is a programmer that knows video tools well, not an editor watching your footage. That is why the results can be impressive — and why the setup is a developer's setup.

What you install before the first video

  1. Claude Code, with a paid Claude plan or an Anthropic API account.
  2. Node.js — Remotion is a JavaScript project, and most skills are installed with npx.
  3. FFmpeg on your system; burning subtitles into a video needs a build with libass.
  4. The Remotion plugin: claude plugin marketplace add remotion-dev/claude-code-plugin, then claude plugin install remotion@remotion, then a restart of Claude Code.
  5. Skills from GitHub for what Remotion does not cover: cutting silences, clipping highlights, YouTube clips (plus pip install yt-dlp pysrt), screen recording through a Playwright MCP server, Manim animations (plus cairo and pkg-config). Lists such as Claude Code Video Toolkit collect dozens of them.
  6. Keys for anything generated. Voice-overs, AI images and AI clips come from separate services, each with its own account, key and bill.

From idea to a finished reel with Claude Code

  1. Collect the material yourself — clips, photos, logo, music — in one folder on your computer.
  2. Describe the video: “a 20-second vertical promo for the autumn menu, three dishes, the price at the end, our brand colours”.
  3. Claude writes the code — Remotion components, an FFmpeg script, or both.
  4. You render on your computer, which stays busy while it runs.
  5. You fix what broke: a missing font, a wrong import, a filter with a typo, a skill that wants another version of a tool. Claude fixes its own errors well, but you read the messages and approve the commands.
  6. You watch, ask for changes and render again.
  7. You export and post it yourself to each network, with a text for each.

Where it gets hard for a small business

  • An afternoon of setup before anything appears on screen: installs, versions, keys, README files.
  • Your computer does the work. Rendering takes its processor and time; the footage has to be copied from your phone first.
  • No quality check of its own. Black frames, sudden silence or text under Instagram's buttons are yours to spot.
  • Several bills — the Claude plan plus every service for voice, images or clips.
  • Licences. Remotion costs nothing for individuals and small companies; bigger companies pay a licence fee.
  • Publishing is separate: the result is a file, and posting it is another job.

None of this is a flaw for a developer — it is the price of full control.

The same reel in Weyvox: one chat with Alice

  1. Open the chat with Alice in the Weyvox app on your phone and write what video you need.
  2. Material. She works with the videos and photos you give her — in the chat or in Materials, up to 10 GB a file — and, when footage is short, makes her own AI photos and AI clips from a photo (3–10 seconds, HD 720p). She does not search the internet for footage.
  3. She watches it first: scenes, words, text on screen.
  4. A plan before the edit. Every scene already plays as its own short clip, next to the sound, captions, length, editing time and price. Nothing is edited until you agree.
  5. She edits on Weyvox's server, not on your phone: the best moment as the hook, cuts between words, transitions, captions word by word, music that drops under speech, your logo, colours and font. Up to 10 minutes in Full HD; 9:16, 4:5, 1:1 or 16:9.
  6. She checks quality — black or frozen frames, silence, loudness, text under a network's buttons — before you see the reel.
  7. Change any scene. The Montage studio shows the video scene by scene: tap a scene and say what to change — only that scene is re-edited, the rest stays as it was.
  8. Publish makes that very video the final one, without editing it again.

The AI underneath is not so different: part of Weyvox's AI processing is done by Anthropic, OpenAI and Google (see the FAQ). The difference is where the work sits — the tools, the setup and the rendering are on Weyvox's side, not on your computer. Every step is shown on Alice's page.

Which route to choose

  • Claude Code, if you are a developer or have one; if you want motion graphics no template has, hundreds of variants generated from data, or a video pipeline inside your own product.
  • Weyvox, if you run a small business and want regular reels from what you film, without installing tools; if every reel should carry your brand and go out with a text for each network.
  • Both, if you like: build a special animated intro in code and leave the weekly reels to Alice. Compared with a classic editor, see Weyvox vs CapCut.

What it costs in Weyvox

Weyvox prices are in credits: 1 credit = €0.01 excl. VAT. Editing is 10 credits for each started second of the finished video, with music, voice-overs and subtitles included; AI clips are 20 credits per second of the clip, an AI photo 10 credits. A 20-second reel from your own footage is 20 × 10 = 200 credits; with two 5-second AI clips it is 200 + 10 × 20 = 400 credits. You pay only for a finished result, a refusal or a failure is not charged, and before anything costly Alice names the price. Every unit price is on the pricing page.

Questions people ask

Can Claude Code edit videos?

Yes, but by writing code rather than in a timeline: with the Remotion plugin it writes the video as React components and renders it, and with FFmpeg it cuts, joins and converts your footage. You install Node.js, FFmpeg, the plugin and skills from GitHub first, and render on your own computer.

What do I need to install to edit video with Claude Code?

Claude Code with a paid Claude plan or an Anthropic API account, Node.js, FFmpeg (with libass for burned-in subtitles), the Remotion plugin, and skills from GitHub for cutting, clipping or animations. Voice-overs, AI images and clips need accounts and keys with separate services.

Is there a simpler way to make a reel with AI?

Yes — an AI agent that edits for you in a chat. In Weyvox you write to Alice what video you need; she uses your videos and photos and makes her own AI photos and clips, shows the plan scene by scene, edits on Weyvox's server, checks quality and sends you the reel to publish.

Can I change one part of the video without redoing everything?

In Weyvox, yes: the Montage studio shows the video scene by scene. Tap a scene and say what to change — only that scene is re-edited, the rest of the reel stays the same.

Does Alice find footage on the internet?

No. She works with the videos and photos you give her and makes her own AI photos and AI clips from a photo (3–10 seconds, HD 720p) when footage is short.
